O Juízo Final em Pedra: o Tímpano Gótico de San Cernin
O tímpano do portal principal da Igreja de São Saturnino (ou San Cernin), em Pamplona, apresenta uma complexa representação iconográfica do Juízo Final, característica da escultura gótica. Ao centro da composição em arco ogival, destaca-se a figura de Cristo Juiz entronizado, exibindo as chagas da crucificação (ostentatio vulnerum). Ladeando-o, encontram-se a Virgem Maria e São João Evangelista ajoelhados em atitude de intercessão pela humanidade, formando a tradicional Deesis. A ladear este grupo central, anjos seguram os Arma Christi, os instrumentos da Paixão, como a cruz, a lança, a coroa de espinhos, os cravos e o flagelo. O lintel inferior complementa a narrativa escatológica, ilustrando a ressurreição dos mortos, que emergem dos seus túmulos em atitude de prece. À direita do lintel, observa-se uma representação gráfica do Inferno, onde almas condenadas são atormentadas por demónios num caldeirão sobre as chamas. A obra, esculpida em pedra, conserva ainda vestígios da sua policromia original, evidenciando a riqueza visual e a função didática que estas estruturas possuíam na Idade Média.
The tympanum of the main portal of the Church of San Saturnino (or San Cernin) in Pamplona features a complex iconographic representation of the Last Judgment, characteristic of Gothic sculpture. At the center of the pointed-arch composition stands the figure of Christ the Judge, enthroned and displaying the wounds of the crucifixion (ostentatio vulnerum). Flanking him are the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist, kneeling in an attitude of intercession for humanity, forming the traditional Deesis. Flanking this central group, angels hold the Arma Christi, the instruments of the Passion, such as the cross, the lance, the crown of thorns, the nails, and the scourge. The lower lintel complements the eschatological narrative, illustrating the resurrection of the dead, who emerge from their tombs in an attitude of prayer. To the right of the lintel, there is a graphic representation of Hell, where damned souls are tormented by demons in a cauldron over the flames. The work, carved in stone, still retains traces of its original polychromy, highlighting the visual richness and didactic function that these structures possessed in the Middle Ages.
