Passos a Azul e Branco: A Lição de Dança de Willem van der Kloet
O painel de azulejos “A lição de dança”, datado de cerca de 1707 e da autoria do mestre holandês Willem van der Kloet, integra o acervo do Museu Nacional do Azulejo, em Lisboa. Originalmente proveniente do Palácio Galvão Mexia, esta obra monumental (170 x 400 cm) é executada em faiança azul e branca. A peça ilustra uma cena aristocrática de lazer, adequando-se à decoração palaciana, e ajuda a documentar um momento decisivo para a evolução da azulejaria em Portugal. Desde a segunda metade do século XVII e até cerca de 1715, a elite portuguesa recorreu com frequência às oficinas holandesas para encomendar painéis de azulejo destinados a igrejas e palácios. Esta preferência relacionava‑se com a reconhecida qualidade técnica da azulejaria holandesa e com o prestígio social da pintura a azul de cobalto sobre esmalte branco, linguagem decorativa que dialogava com a cobiçada porcelana chinesa. Willem van der Kloet destacou‑se como um dos principais azulejadores holandeses a trabalhar para o mercado português, respondendo a encomendas exigentes de elites e instituições e espelhando o intenso intercâmbio comercial e artístico europeu do início do século XVIII.
The tile panel “The Dance Lesson,” dated around 1707 and created by the Dutch master Willem van der Kloet, is part of the collection of the National Tile Museum in Lisbon. Originally from the Galvão Mexia Palace, this monumental work (170 x 400 cm) is executed in blue and white faience. The piece depicts an aristocratic leisure scene, befitting palace décor, and helps document a decisive moment in the evolution of tile art in Portugal. From the second half of the 17th century until around 1715, the Portuguese elite frequently turned to Dutch workshops to commission tile panels for churches and palaces. This preference stemmed from the recognized technical quality of Dutch tilework and the social prestige of cobalt blue painting on white glaze, a decorative style that resonated with coveted Chinese porcelain. Willem van der Kloet stood out as one of the leading Dutch tile makers working for the Portuguese market, fulfilling demanding commissions from elites and institutions and reflecting the intense European commercial and artistic exchange of the early 18th century.
