Arquitetura e Devoção: A Capela do Santíssimo Sacramento na Catedral de Pisa
Capela do Santíssimo Sacramento, no braço esquerdo do transepto da Catedral de Pisa, integrada na estrutura românica original do duomo. As colunas monolíticas em mármore e os arcos de volta perfeita mantêm a lógica espacial medieval, enquanto o revestimento em mármores policromos evidencia campanhas decorativas dos séculos XVI e XVII. Entre 1545 e 1563, Stagio Stagi e Francesco Mosca conceberam e executaram o complexo escultórico em mármore, com nichos e estátuas que enquadram o altar. Sobre o altar ergue-se o grande cibório eucarístico em prata e bronze, desenhado por Giovan Battista Foggini entre 1678 e 1686, em forma de pequeno templo sustentado por anjos e coroado por uma figura de Cristo Ressuscitado. O altar, atribuído a Sebastiano Tamburini, integra degraus em bronze com cenas em baixo‑relevo da Paixão, reforçando a centralidade do mistério eucarístico. Os bancos de madeira organizados diante da capela sublinham o uso litúrgico continuado deste espaço, que condensa séculos de história artística num único enquadramento.
Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, located in the left arm of the transept of Pisa Cathedral, integrated into the cathedral’s original Romanesque structure. The monolithic marble columns and semicircular arches preserve the medieval spatial logic, while the polychrome marble cladding highlights decorative campaigns from the 16th and 17th centuries. Between 1545 and 1563, Stagio Stagi and Francesco Mosca designed and executed the marble sculptural complex, with niches and statues framing the altar. Above the altar stands the large Eucharistic ciborium in silver and bronze, designed by Giovan Battista Foggini between 1678 and 1686, in the shape of a small temple supported by angels and crowned by a figure of the Risen Christ. The altar, attributed to Sebastiano Tamburini, features bronze steps with bas-relief scenes of the Passion, reinforcing the centrality of the Eucharistic mystery. The wooden pews arranged in front of the chapel underscore the continued liturgical use of this space, which condenses centuries of artistic history into a single setting.
