O Terreiro do Açougue, localizado no centro histórico de Montalegre, Vila Real, é um espaço que conjuga a arquitetura tradicional da região com a imponente silhueta do Castelo de Montalegre, erguido entre os séculos XIII e XIV. Classificada como Monumento Nacional desde 1910, a fortaleza, situada no cume de um monte granítico, foi construída para reforçar a defesa da fronteira com a Galiza. Em primeiro plano, a tipologia das casas, caracterizadas pelo uso de granito e ruelas irregulares, dá um testemunho da identidade cultural da região, refletindo técnicas construtivas adaptadas ao clima rigoroso. O topónimo "Terreiro do Açougue" alude à sua função antiga de espaço comercial, onde se realizava o matadouro municipal. Terreiro do Açougue, located in the historic center of Montalegre, Vila Real, is a space that combines the traditional architecture of the region with the imposing silhouette of Montalegre Castle, built between the 13th and 14th centuries. Classified as a National Monument since 1910, the fortress, located on the summit of a granite hill, was built to reinforce the defense of the border with Galicia.
