Dominando a paisagem alentejana a partir de uma elevação a norte de Elvas, o Forte da Graça, ou Forte Conde de Lippe, é um exemplar notável da arquitetura militar setecentista e uma peça chave do sistema defensivo da cidade. A sua construção, iniciada em 1763 e concluída em 1792, seguiu o estilo Vauban e foi crucial para a defesa da "Chave do Reino" na fronteira com Espanha. Estrategicamente posicionado, oferece uma vista privilegiada sobre Elvas, as suas muralhas seiscentistas e o Aqueduto da Amoreira, obra hidráulica que garantia o abastecimento da cidade durante longos cercos. Este sistema defensivo, que inclui o Forte de Santa Luzia e as muralhas abaluartadas, é considerado o maior do mundo na sua tipologia e foi classificado como Património Mundial da Humanidade pela UNESCO, sob a designação "Cidade-Quartel Fronteiriça de Elvas e as suas Fortificações", testemunhando a importância estratégica e militar da cidade ao longo da história, nomeadamente durante as Guerras da Restauração e outros conflitos luso-espanhóis.

Dominating the Alentejo landscape from a hill north of Elvas, the Forte da Graça, or Forte Conde de Lippe, is a remarkable example of eighteenth-century military architecture and a key part of the city's defensive system. Its construction, which began in 1763 and was completed in 1792, followed the Vauban style and was crucial for the defense of the "Key to the Kingdom" on the border with Spain. Strategically positioned, it offers a privileged view of Elvas, its 17th-century walls and the Amoreira Aqueduct, a hydraulic work that guaranteed the city's supply during long sieges. This defensive system, which includes the Santa Luzia Fort and the bastioned walls, is considered the largest of its kind in the world and has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO under the designation 'Garrison Border Town of Elvas and its Fortifications', testifying to the city's strategic and military importance throughout history, particularly during the Restoration Wars and other Portuguese-Spanish conflicts.
