A enfermaria do Convento de Mafra, datada do século XVIII e integrada no complexo joanino, representava um modelo avançado de arquitetura hospitalar monástica. Localizada junto à Basílica para facilitar o apoio espiritual, dispunha de uma nave central coberta por abóbada de berço e corredores laterais com 36 celas individuais, separadas por cortinas que garantiam privacidade aos pacientes. O altar, posicionado ao fundo, permitia aos religiosos doentes assistirem às celebrações religiosas sem sair do leito. Esta configuração linear otimizava a circulação dos enfermeiros e a ventilação, refletindo a combinação entre cuidados físicos e assistência espiritual, princípios da medicina monástica e da caridade franciscana.

The infirmary of the Convent of Mafra, dating from the 18th century and part of the Joanine complex, represented an advanced model of monastic hospital architecture. Located next to the Basilica to facilitate spiritual support, it had a central nave covered by a barrel vault and side corridors with 36 individual cells, separated by curtains that ensured privacy for patients. The altar, positioned at the back, allowed sick monks to attend religious celebrations without leaving their beds. This linear configuration optimized the circulation of nurses and ventilation, reflecting the combination of physical care and spiritual assistance, principles of monastic medicine and Franciscan charity.
