Entre Muros de Pedra Seca: O Caminho Ancestral para Drave
O caminho rural que se estende entre muros de pedra solta conduz à aldeia de Drave, frequentemente designada como "Aldeia Mágica", situada numa zona remota da Serra da Freita, no concelho de Arouca. Os muros visíveis na imagem foram erguidos segundo a técnica ancestral da pedra seca, sem recurso a argamassa, encaixando blocos graníticos de diferentes dimensões através do conhecimento empírico transmitido entre gerações de pastores e agricultores. Esta técnica, inscrita em 2018 na Lista Representativa do Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade da UNESCO como parte da ‘Arte de construir muros de pedra seca, servia para delimitar propriedades, conter gado e proteger culturas dos ventos serranos. A vegetação envolvente inclui giestas, urzes e carvalhos, característica do bosque atlântico de altitude. O percurso pedestre que liga Regoufe a Drave é hoje um dos trilhos mais procurados no Geoparque Arouca, reconhecido como Geoparque Mundial da UNESCO desde 2015, pela sua paisagem geológica única, marcada por afloramentos graníticos, vales encaixados e a ausência total de acesso rodoviário à aldeia de destino, que mantém preservada a arquitetura vernacular xistosa serrana.
The rural path that winds between dry-stone walls leads to the village of Drave, often referred to as the “Magical Village,” located in a remote area of the Serra da Freita, in the municipality of Arouca. The walls visible in the image were built using the ancient dry-stone technique, without mortar, by fitting granite blocks of different sizes together using empirical knowledge passed down through generations of shepherds and farmers. This technique, inscribed in 2018 on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity as part of the “Art of Dry Stone Walling,” served to demarcate properties, contain livestock, and protect crops from mountain winds. The surrounding vegetation includes broom, heather, and oak trees, characteristic of the high-altitude Atlantic forest. The hiking trail connecting Regoufe to Drave is today one of the most popular trails in the Arouca Geopark, recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015, for its unique geological landscape, marked by granite outcrops, steep-sided valleys, and the complete lack of road access to the destination village, which preserves the vernacular schist architecture of the mountains.
