Rota das Amendoeiras: A Aldeia Vista ao Passo das Cabras
Um rebanho de cabras atravessa as ruas empedradas da aldeia de Castelo Melhor, no concelho de Vila Nova de Foz Côa, durante o percurso da Rota das Amendoeiras. Esta prática de pastoreio comunitário, em que os rebanhos circulam livremente pelas aldeias transmontanas e beirãs, mantém-se como testemunho vivo de uma economia agropastoril que moldou a paisagem e a identidade do Nordeste português durante séculos. As cabras, de raças autóctones como a Serrana e a Bravia, apresentam pelagens variadas — castanhas, cinzentas, negras e malhadas — e ostentam brincos auriculares de identificação sanitária obrigatória, além de chocalhos tradicionais em bronze. Castelo Melhor, situada na área do Douro Superior, em território classificado como Património Mundial da UNESCO, situa‑se na área envolvente do sítio arqueológico do Vale do Côa, Património Mundial da UNESCO. A Rota das Amendoeiras, percorrida sobretudo entre fevereiro e março, permite observar a floração das amendoeiras enquanto se contacta com modos de vida rurais que resistem ao despovoamento do interior.
A herd of goats crosses the cobblestone streets of the village of Castelo Melhor, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, along the Almond Tree Trail. This practice of communal herding, in which flocks roam freely through the villages of Trás-os-Montes and Beira, remains a living testament to an agro-pastoral economy that has shaped the landscape and identity of northeastern Portugal for centuries. The goats, of native breeds such as the Serrana and the Bravia, have varied coats—brown, gray, black, and spotted—and wear ear tags for mandatory health identification, as well as traditional bronze bells. Castelo Melhor, located in the Upper Douro region, within an area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies in the vicinity of the Côa Valley archaeological site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Almond Blossom Route, best traveled between February and March, allows visitors to observe the blooming of the almond trees while experiencing rural ways of life that resist the depopulation of the interior.
