Patio Chico: a escala humana diante da Catedral Nova

A construção da Catedral Nova iniciou-se no século XVI, prolongando-se até ao século XVIII, integrando elementos do gótico tardio, renascimento e barroco. A fachada visível evidencia uma complexa ornamentação em estilo plateresco, esculpida na característica pedra de Villamayor, um arenito com elevado teor de ferro que confere aos edifícios da região a sua típica tonalidade dourada. O portal, estruturado com arcos e relevos detalhados, demonstra as avançadas técnicas de cantaria da época. Em plano de fundo, ergue-se a cúpula que coroa o cruzeiro da basílica, estrutura que sofreu intervenções de consolidação após o terramoto de Lisboa de 1755. O Patio Chico constitui um ponto de observação privilegiado para analisar a monumentalidade da estrutura, incluindo a disposição dos seus contrafortes e pináculos, elementos fundamentais para a estabilidade e estética deste património histórico.

Construction of the New Cathedral began in the 16th century and continued into the 18th century, incorporating elements of the Late Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The visible façade features intricate Plateresque ornamentation, carved from the characteristic Villamayor stone, a sandstone with a high iron content that gives the region’s buildings their typical golden hue. The portal, structured with arches and detailed reliefs, demonstrates the advanced stonework techniques of the era. In the background rises the dome that crowns the basilica’s transept, a structure that underwent consolidation work following the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The Patio Chico offers a prime vantage point for appreciating the monumentality of the structure, including the arrangement of its buttresses and pinnacles—elements fundamental to the stability and aesthetics of this historic landmark.
