O Torreão do Forte da Graça
O terraço da Casa do Governador situa-se no reduto central do Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça, também conhecido como Forte do Conde de Lippe, erguido entre 1763 e 1792 no Monte da Graça, em Elvas. A construção foi dirigida pelo conde reinante de Schaumburg-Lippe, comandante do exército português durante a Guerra Fantástica (1762), e constitui uma das mais notáveis obras de engenharia militar do século XVIII na Península Ibérica. O torreão octogonal visível na imagem, com a sua cobertura de telha e janela circular gradeada, remata o corpo central da residência do governador da praça-forte, oferecendo uma vista panorâmica sobre a planície alentejana e a fronteira com Espanha. O forte integra o conjunto das Fortificações de Elvas, classificado como Património Mundial da UNESCO desde 2012. A alvenaria pintada de amarelo-ocre e branco, a balaustrada curva e o pavimento em tijoleira são elementos característicos da arquitetura militar portuguesa setecentista, onde a funcionalidade defensiva coexistia com alguma dignidade residencial.
The terrace of the Governor’s House is located in the central redoubt of the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Graça, also known as the Fort of the Count of Lippe, built between 1763 and 1792 on Monte da Graça in Elvas. The construction was overseen by the reigning Count of Schaumburg-Lippe, commander of the Portuguese army during the Great War (1762), and constitutes one of the most notable works of military engineering of the 18th century in the Iberian Peninsula. The octagonal turret visible in the image, with its tiled roof and circular barred window, crowns the central section of the governor’s residence within the fortress, offering a panoramic view of the Alentejo plain and the border with Spain. The fort is part of the Elvas Fortifications, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. The ochre-yellow and white-painted masonry, the curved balustrade, and the terracotta tile flooring are characteristic elements of 18th-century Portuguese military architecture, where defensive functionality coexisted with a certain residential dignity.
