O Bronze e a Cal — Memória e Fé no Litoral Oeste
Capela de Santa Helena, situada na estância balnear de Santa Cruz, no concelho de Torres Vedras. Este edifício é um exemplar representativo da arquitetura religiosa vernacular portuguesa, pautando-se pela sua notória simplicidade estrutural. A fachada principal exibe alvenaria tradicional caiada de branco, contrastando com os rodapés e as molduras dos vãos pintados num tom de azul vivo, uma tipologia cromática historicamente associada às povoações costeiras e piscatórias de Portugal. O remate superior é constituído por uma sineira de arco perfeito, encimada por uma cruz latina e albergando um sino de bronze, sob a qual se encontra um pequeno painel de azulejos figurativos. O adro da capela está pavimentado com a característica calçada portuguesa. Em frente ao edifício ergue-se a estátua de Antero de Quental, da autoria de Rodrigo Baeta, inaugurada em 29 de agosto de 2009 e concebida como homenagem à passagem do poeta por Santa Cruz. A escultura representa Antero sentado, voltado para o mar, reforçando a ligação simbólica entre a memória literária e o lugar.
The Chapel of Santa Helena, located in the seaside resort of Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Torres Vedras. This building is a prime example of Portuguese vernacular religious architecture, characterized by its notable structural simplicity. The main façade features traditional whitewashed masonry, contrasting with the baseboards and window frames painted in a bright blue hue, a color scheme historically associated with Portugal’s coastal and fishing villages. The upper section consists of a bell tower with a semicircular arch, topped by a Latin cross and housing a bronze bell, beneath which is a small panel of figurative tiles. The chapel’s churchyard is paved with the characteristic Portuguese cobblestone pattern. In front of the building stands the statue of Antero de Quental, created by Rodrigo Baeta, unveiled on August 29, 2009, and conceived as a tribute to the poet’s visit to Santa Cruz. The sculpture depicts Antero seated, facing the sea, reinforcing the symbolic connection between literary memory and the place.
