Igreja da Misericórdia de Sortelha: Um Legado em Ruínas
As ruínas da Igreja da Misericórdia de Sortelha, no distrito da Guarda, são um testemunho marcante da história religiosa, social e assistencial desta aldeia histórica, ligada desde o século XVI à rede de Santas Casas da Misericórdia, cuja génese remonta a 1498. Edificada em pedra granítica e hoje arruinada, permite ainda reconhecer elementos renascentistas, como o arco de volta perfeita que marca o acesso ao interior e os muros em cantaria aparelhada, indícios da qualidade construtiva original. A sua degradação acompanha o despovoamento das aldeias de montanha ao longo do século XX e a consequente perda de função destas estruturas de apoio comunitário. Integrada no conjunto monumental de Sortelha, classificada como conjunto de interesse público, a antiga igreja oferece atualmente um ponto privilegiado de contemplação da paisagem e convida à reflexão sobre o tempo e a transformação do território raiano.
The ruins of the Church of the Misericórdia de Sortelha, in the district of Guarda, stand as a striking testament to the religious, social, and charitable history of this historic village, which has been linked since the 16th century to the network of Santas Casas da Misericórdia, whose origins date back to 1498. Built of granite and now in ruins, it still reveals Renaissance elements, such as the semicircular arch marking the entrance and the walls of dressed stone, evidence of the original quality of construction. Its deterioration parallels the depopulation of mountain villages throughout the 20th century and the consequent loss of function of these community support structures. Part of the Sortelha monumental complex, classified as a site of public interest, the old church currently offers a prime vantage point for contemplating the landscape and invites reflection on time and the transformation of the border region.
