Da Rocha à Raia: o Horizonte de Sortelha
A partir do afloramento granítico junto às ruínas da antiga Igreja da Misericórdia, a vista abre-se para a paisagem que envolve Sortelha, aldeia histórica do concelho do Sabugal, no limite do planalto beirão. Fora das muralhas, reconhece‑se a matriz geológica da região: grandes lajes e blocos de granito, moldados pela meteorização e pela erosão, que condicionam os caminhos, as linhas de água e a ocupação humana. No horizonte estende‑se o relevo ondulado da Beira Interior, com manchas de mato e bosques dispersos, parcelas agrícolas e povoamento rarefeito, típico de um território de altitude e clima continental. Este enquadramento ajuda a perceber a lógica defensiva medieval de Sortelha, implantada num cabeço rochoso para controlo visual e proteção da raia, bem como o papel das Misericórdias na assistência local a partir da época moderna.
From the granite outcrop near the ruins of the old Church of the Misericórdia, the view opens up to the landscape surrounding Sortelha, a historic village in the municipality of Sabugal, on the edge of the Beira plateau. Outside the walls, the region’s geological matrix is evident: large slabs and blocks of granite, shaped by weathering and erosion, which determine the paths, watercourses, and human settlement. On the horizon stretches the undulating terrain of Beira Interior, dotted with patches of scrub and scattered woods, agricultural plots, and sparse settlements—typical of a high-altitude region with a continental climate. This setting helps explain the medieval defensive logic of Sortelha, situated on a rocky hilltop for visual control and protection of the border, as well as the role of the Misericórdias in providing local assistance from the modern era onward.
