O Guardião de Pedra: Memória Lusitana em Cabeceiras de Basto
A Estátua 'O Basto', situada na Praça da República em Cabeceiras de Basto, junto ao Posto de Turismo, é um dos símbolos identitários mais marcantes do concelho. Trata‑se de uma escultura em granito que representa um guerreiro lusitano de tradição castreja, envergando sagum curto, cinturão de três toros, polainas e botas de meio cano, segurando um pequeno escudo esférico com rebordo côncavo e motivo fitomórfico ao centro. No peito e no escudo lê‑se a inscrição alusiva à “PONTE DE SÃO MIGUEL DE REFOJOS DE BASTO 1612”, testemunhando a sua associação a essa infraestrutura histórica. O conjunto assenta em soco quadrangular e pedestal paralelepipédico com moldura, onde se inscreve “O BASTO”, sublinhando a ligação ao território. A cabeça atual, com barretina, suíças e bigode farto, corresponde a um soldado oitocentista aplicado em 1892, alterando o aspeto original do guerreiro. A peça, deslocada em 2000 para o seu posicionamento presente, integra hoje o núcleo urbano como emblema da memória histórica e da identidade de Cabeceiras de Basto.
The 'O Basto' statue, located in Praça da República in Cabeceiras de Basto, next to the Tourist Office, is one of the most striking symbols of the municipality's identity. It is a granite sculpture representing a Lusitanian warrior in the Castreja tradition, wearing a short sagum, a three-torus belt, leggings, and mid-calf boots, holding a small spherical shield with a concave rim and a phytomorphic motif in the center. On his chest and shield is an inscription referring to the “PONTE DE SÃO MIGUEL DE REFOJOS DE BASTO 1612,” testifying to his association with this historic infrastructure. The ensemble rests on a square base and a parallelepiped pedestal with a frame, where “O BASTO” is inscribed, emphasizing the connection to the territory. The current head, with a beret, sideburns, and a thick moustache, corresponds to a 19th-century soldier added in 1892, altering the original appearance of the warrior. The piece, moved in 2000 to its current location, is now part of the urban center as an emblem of the historical memory and identity of Cabeceiras de Basto.
