D. Filipa de Lencastre e a Ínclita Geração
Detalhe do Padrão dos Descobrimentos, em Belém, Lisboa, focando-se na figura de D. Filipa de Lencastre, a única mulher representada entre as trinta e três estátuas do monumento. Coroada e com o olhar orientado para o Tejo, a rainha simboliza a matriz da “Ínclita Geração”, tendo desempenhado um papel decisivo na formação dos seus filhos, os infantes que impulsionaram a expansão marítima portuguesa. Atrás de si distingue-se o Infante D. Pedro, Duque de Coimbra, um dos seus filhos, figura central da dinastia de Avis e protagonista da vida política e cultural do século XV português. O conjunto escultórico foi originalmente concebido em materiais efémeros para a Exposição do Mundo Português de 1940, com arquitetura de Cottinelli Telmo e escultura de Leopoldo de Almeida. Em 1960, por ocasião do quinto centenário da morte do Infante D. Henrique, o monumento foi reconstruído definitivamente em betão e cantaria de pedra rosal de Leiria, com esculturas executadas em calcário da região de Sintra.

Crowned and gazing toward the Tagus River, the queen symbolizes the foundation of the “Illustrious Generation,” having played a decisive role in the upbringing of her sons, the princes who drove Portugal’s maritime expansion. Behind her stands Prince Pedro, Duke of Coimbra, one of her sons, a central figure of the Avis dynasty and a leading figure in the political and cultural life of 15th-century Portugal. The sculptural ensemble was originally conceived in ephemeral materials for the 1940 Portuguese World Exhibition, with architecture by Cottinelli Telmo and sculpture by Leopoldo de Almeida. In 1960, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, the monument was permanently reconstructed in concrete and Leiria rosal stone, with sculptures carved from limestone from the Sintra region.
