Sortelha e a Memória das Pedras: As Ruínas da Igreja da Misericórdia
Interior das ruínas da antiga Igreja da Misericórdia de Sortelha, instalada, no século XVII, na primitiva igreja medieval de São João, situada extramuros da aldeia histórica do Sabugal. A estrutura em granito, hoje desprovida de cobertura, permite observar o arco triunfal de volta perfeita que separava a nave da capela‑mor, bem como o altar em cantaria acessível por degraus laterais. À direita, as mísulas salientes testemunham a existência de um coro alto em madeira, enquanto os vãos gradeados revelam posteriores adaptações de uso e segurança. Integrada na rede das Santas Casas da Misericórdia, fundada em 1498, esta igreja articulava funções de culto com assistência a pobres, doentes e peregrinos, em ligação com o antigo hospital vizinho. O atual estado de ruína, resultado da perda de funções religiosas e do despovoamento da Beira Interior, transforma o espaço num lugar de leitura das camadas históricas de Sortelha e da evolução do seu território para além do recinto amuralhado.
Interior of the ruins of the former Church of Misericórdia de Sortelha, built in the 17th century on the site of the original medieval church of São João, located outside the walls of the historic village of Sabugal. The granite structure, now roofless, allows visitors to see the round triumphal arch that separated the nave from the chancel, as well as the stone altar accessible by side steps. On the right, the protruding corbels bear witness to the existence of a high wooden choir, while the barred openings reveal later adaptations for use and security. Part of the network of Santas Casas da Misericórdia (Houses of Mercy), founded in 1498, this church combined worship with assistance to the poor, sick, and pilgrims, in connection with the old neighboring hospital. Its current state of ruin, resulting from the loss of religious functions and the depopulation of Beira Interior, transforms the space into a place where one can read the historical layers of Sortelha and the evolution of its territory beyond the walled enclosure.
