A Torre de Santa Cruz: um marco visual na costa oeste de Portugal
A Torre de Santa Cruz ergue-se na arriba da Praia de Santa Cruz, na freguesia da Silveira, concelho de Torres Vedras, assumindo-se como o elemento mais reconhecível da frente marítima local. Construída em meados do século XX por iniciativa de José Pedro de Oliveira, integra-se na tradição das estâncias balneares portuguesas que marcaram a ocupação turística do litoral a partir do final do século XIX. O seu desenho revivalista, com arcadas no piso inferior e coroamento ameado, remete para a linguagem de torres de vigia históricas, hoje reapropriada como miradouro sobre o Atlântico e ponto de orientação para quem percorre o passeio marginal. Na base, o edifício articula-se com o paredão, as escadas e o espaço de esplanadas que acompanham o areal, onde se combinam funções de lazer, apoio à praia e proteção costeira. Este enquadramento reflete a coexistência entre engenharia costeira, uso público do território e valorização patrimonial da paisagem. A torre, frequentemente associada à imagem turística de Santa Cruz, sintetiza assim a relação entre arquitetura, geografia e práticas balneares contemporâneas.
The Santa Cruz Tower stands on the cliff above Santa Cruz Beach, in the parish of Silveira, municipality of Torres Vedras, and is the most recognizable feature of the local seafront. Built in the mid-20th century on the initiative of José Pedro de Oliveira, it is part of the tradition of Portuguese seaside resorts that marked the tourist occupation of the coast from the end of the 19th century onwards. Its revivalist design, with arcades on the lower floor and crenellated crown, recalls the style of historic watchtowers, now reappropriated as a viewpoint over the Atlantic and a landmark for those walking along the promenade. At its base, the building connects with the seawall, the stairs, and the terraces that line the beach, combining leisure, beach support, and coastal protection functions. This setting reflects the coexistence of coastal engineering, public use of the territory, and heritage enhancement of the landscape. The tower, often associated with the tourist image of Santa Cruz, thus synthesizes the relationship between architecture, geography, and contemporary beach practices.
