Paisagem Rural e Fluvial do Alvão
Nas margens do rio Olo, situado no Parque Natural do Alvão, entre Varzigueto e as Fisgas de Ermelo. A vegetação ribeirinha, composta por urzes e carquejas, é adaptada aos solos ácidos, enquanto os campos compartimentados por muros e sebes evidenciam a prática agro-pastoril da região, caracterizada por lameiros e parcelas em socalco. On the banks of the Olo River, located in the Alvão Natural Park between Varzigueto and the Fisgas de Ermelo, a confined valley is formed where clear water flows over rocky outcrops, creating rapids and small waterfalls. The riverside vegetation, made up of heather and gorse, is adapted to the acidic soils, while the fields demarcated by walls and hedges highlight the region's agro-pastoral practice, characterized by meadows and terraced plots. The village of Varzigueto reflects rural traditions that illustrate human adaptation to the rugged terrain, particularly through subsistence agriculture. This riverine ecosystem not only harbors rich biodiversity, including protected species such as otters and water blackbirds, but also constitutes a fundamental ecological corridor within the Natura 2000 network, serving as an exceptional location for outdoor activities and nature observation.
