Narrativas em pedra na galeria norte de San Martín
The carved capital of the north gallery of the Church of San Martín, in Segovia, an example of 12th-century Castilian Romanesque sculpture, is part of a narrative ensemble with a catechetical function. Set on twin columns, the capital features an upper abacus decorated with geometric interlacing, a common pattern at the time, symbolizing eternity. The basket, despite the erosion that has softened details, reveals scenes from the Nativity and the Passion of Christ. The iconography includes the Flight into Egypt, with the Virgin and Saint Joseph, and other passages such as the Annunciation, the Massacre of the Innocents and the Presentation in the Temple, arranged in successive registers under arches, typical of Romanesque grammar. Other capitals in the set depict the Resurrection of Lazarus, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the betrayal of Judase="white-space-collapse: preserve;">Despite its state of conservation, marked by erosion, the piece allows us to glimpse the doctrinal richness and moral contrast between the example of Christ and the spiritual combat of the faithful, materializing biblical narratives for the instruction of the faithful.
