As ruínas da Igreja da Misericórdia de Sortelha, outrora Igreja de São João do século XIV e adaptada no século XVII, erguem-se como um testemunho da expansão urbana e da influência das Santas Casas da Misericórdia em Portugal. Situada extramuros da cidadela medieval, a igreja integrava uma rede de assistência social e religiosa, articulando funções de culto e apoio à comunidade local, incluindo um hospital adjacente. A estrutura, em granito, preserva o arco triunfal que delimitava a nave da capela-mor e vestígios do altar, sacristia e base do púlpito. Apesar do estado de ruína, com a cobertura desaparecida e paredes expostas, a Igreja da Misericórdia mantém-se um marco histórico relevante, ilustrando a organização espacial do templo e a importância das Misericórdias na região. Integra o conjunto monumental de Sortelha, oferecendo uma perspetiva sobre a história e o património da aldeia.

The ruins of the Church of Mercy in Sortelha, formerly the 14th-century Church of St. John and adapted in the 17th century, stand as a testament to urban expansion and the influence of the Holy Houses of Mercy in Portugal. Located outside the walls of the medieval citadel, the church was part of a social and religious assistance network, combining worship and support for the local community, including an adjacent hospital. The granite structure preserves the triumphal arch that separated the nave from the chancel and traces of the altar, sacristy, and base of the pulpit. Despite its state of ruin, with its roof gone and walls exposed, the Church of Mercy remains an important historical landmark, illustrating the spatial organization of the temple and the importance of the Misericórdias in the region. It is part of the monumental complex of Sortelha, offering a perspective on the history and heritage of the village.
