Ilha do Pessegueiro: História e Natureza na Costa Alentejana
A Ilha do Pessegueiro, localizada frente à vila de Porto
Covo no litoral alentejano, é um sítio histórico e natural significativo, com
vestígios de ocupação desde a época romana, evidentes em tanques de salga de
peixe utilizados para o comércio no Mediterrâneo. No topo da ilha, encontram-se
as ruínas de uma fortificação do século XVI, parte de um plano defensivo
elaborado para proteger a costa portuguesa de ataques de piratas. Embora o
projeto original de ligação à costa por um molhe tenha sido inviável, os restos
da tentativa de construção ainda são visíveis. A ilha faz parte do Parque
Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, cuja proteção visa conservar
a rica biodiversidade e o património natural. O acesso à ilha é restrito para
preservar estas características, enquanto as águas que a rodeiam atraem
mergulhadores interessados na fauna marinha. Com uma história rica e um
ecossistema valioso, a Ilha do Pessegueiro é um marco paisagístico da costa
alentejana.
Ilha do Pessegueiro, located opposite the village of Porto Covo on the Alentejo coast, is a significant historical and natural site, with traces of occupation since Roman times, evident in fish salting tanks used for trade in the Mediterranean. At the top of the island are the ruins of a 16th-century fortification, part of a defensive plan designed to protect the Portuguese coast from pirate attacks. Although the original project to connect the island to the coast by a breakwater was unfeasible, the remains of the attempted construction are still visible. The island is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, which aims to protect its rich biodiversity and natural heritage. Access to the island is restricted to preserve these characteristics, while the waters surrounding it attract divers interested in marine fauna. With a rich history and a valuable ecosystem, Pessegueiro Island is a landmark of the Alentejo coast.
