Ceres: Arte Romana e Propaganda Imperial em Augusta Emerita
A escultura em mármore do século I d.C. representa Ceres, deusa romana da agricultura, colheitas e fertilidade, equivalente à grega Deméter. Originária da <i>scaenae frons</i> do Teatro Romano de Mérida, a peça reflete a ligação entre a arte e a religião na antiga Emerita Augusta, capital da Lusitânia. A postura majestosa da figura, vestida em túnica e manto com drapeados elaborados, destaca a técnica escultórica romana e o caráter solene do culto. Os atributos perdidos, como espigas de trigo ou cornucópia, reforçariam a identificação com Ceres, simbolizando a abundância agrícola e o papel do imperador na garantia da prosperidade. Esta escultura, endereçada à cultura local, ilustra o sincretismo entre a religiosidade clássica e a propaganda imperial. Atualmente, a obra integra a coleção permanente do Museu Nacional de Arte Romana, um centro de referência para o estudo do património romano na Península Ibérica.
The 1st-century AD marble sculpture depicts Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, harvests, and fertility, equivalent to the Greek Demeter. Originally from the scaenae frons of the Roman Theater of Mérida, the piece reflects the connection between art and religion in ancient Emerita Augusta, capital of Lusitania. The majestic posture of the figure, dressed in a tunic and cloak with elaborate drapery, highlights Roman sculptural technique and the solemn character of the cult. Lost attributes, such as ears of wheat or cornucopia, would reinforce the identification with Ceres, symbolizing agricultural abundance and the emperor's role in ensuring prosperity. This sculpture, addressed to the local culture, illustrates the syncretism between classical religiosity and imperial propaganda. Currently, the work is part of the permanent collection of the National Museum of Roman Art, a center of reference for the study of Roman heritage in the Iberian Peninsula.
