A imagem retrata uma representação de "La
Moreneta", a Virgem de Montserrat, na Catedral de Barcelona. Embora o
santuário principal da padroeira da Catalunha se encontre no mosteiro homónimo,
esta réplica, instalada em 1945, permite aos fiéis venerá-la na cidade. A
estátua, uma talha em madeira policromada do século XII, apresenta a Virgem
Maria sentada num trono com o Menino Jesus ao colo, segurando uma esfera,
símbolo do cosmos. A tonalidade escura, que lhe confere o nome popular, resulta
da oxidação do verniz ao longo do tempo. Integrada num retábulo ricamente
decorado, a imagem é um foco de culto e reflexão, representando a fé e a
identidade cultural catalã. Segundo a lenda, a imagem original foi descoberta
por pastores no século IX, tornando-se um símbolo de proteção e
espiritualidade, atraindo peregrinos e crentes.
