O acesso ao Castelo de Leiria, um importante monumento nacional e símbolo da cidade, faz-se pela Porta da Albacara, sob uma torre que outrora serviu de sineira para a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Pena. Originalmente construído em 1135 por D. Afonso Henriques, o castelo teve um papel estratégico na Reconquista Cristã, sofrendo ampliações e melhoramentos ao longo dos séculos, nomeadamente por D. Sancho I, que reforçou as muralhas, e D. Dinis, que ergueu a Torre de Menagem em 1324 e adaptou-o a palácio. A Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Pena, de estilo gótico, tem origens numa capela mandada edificar por D. Afonso Henriques, sendo reconstruída por D. João I no século XIV. No início do século XX, o arquiteto Ernesto Korrodi liderou um restauro significativo, conferindo ao conjunto um revivalismo medieval de inspiração romântica. O complexo, que inclui ainda os Paços Reais, combina elementos militares e eclesiásticos, refletindo a importância histórica e turística de Leiria.

Access to the Castle of Leiria, an important national monument and symbol of the city, is through the Porta da Albacara, under a tower that once served as a bell tower for the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena. Originally built in 1135 by D. Afonso Henriques, the castle played a strategic role in the Christian Reconquest, undergoing expansions and improvements over the centuries, namely by D. Sancho I, who reinforced the walls, and D. Dinis, who erected the Keep in 1324 and adapted it to the palace. The Gothic-style Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena has its origins in a chapel built by D. Afonso Henriques and rebuilt by D. João I in the 14th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the architect Ernesto Korrodi led a significant restoration, giving the complex a medieval revivalism of romantic inspiration. The complex, which also includes the Royal Palace, combines military and ecclesiastical elements, reflecting the historical and tourist importance of Leiria.
