A imagem mostra o interior do Museu Nacional dos Coches em 2004, ainda instalado no Picadeiro Real de Belém, edifício construído em 1787 por iniciativa da rainha D. Maria I. Este espaço, de arquitetura neoclássica, acolheu durante décadas uma das mais notáveis coleções de viaturas de aparato da Europa, com exemplares dos séculos XVII a XIX utilizados pela corte portuguesa e por outras casas reais. Em 2015, grande parte da coleção foi transferida para o novo edifício do museu, situado nas imediações, com melhores condições de conservação e acessibilidade. A imagem documenta o ambiente expositivo anterior à mudança, preservando a relação entre o património móvel e o enquadramento histórico do antigo picadeiro.

The image shows the interior of the National Coach Museum in 2004, still housed in the Royal Riding Hall of Belém, a building constructed in 1787 on the initiative of Queen Maria I. This space, with its neoclassical architecture, housed for decades one of the most remarkable collections of state carriages in Europe, with examples from the 17th to 19th centuries used by the Portuguese court and other royal houses. In 2015, much of the collection was transferred to the new museum building, located nearby, with better conservation and accessibility conditions. The image documents the exhibition environment prior to the move, preserving the relationship between the movable heritage and the historical setting of the old riding school.
