A fotografia de 2003 retrata a antiga central hidroelétrica da Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos do Ferro, em Fafe, conhecida como "Fábrica do Ferro", fundada em 1887 como sucessora de uma unidade de moagem. A central, com tecnologia do início do século XX e uma potência original de 300 HP, aproveitava a força hidráulica do rio Ferro, permitindo a autonomia energética da fábrica numa época de rede elétrica nacional incipiente. A imagem revela o gerador, veios, polias e o quadro de comando com mostradores analógicos, componentes chave para a produção e distribuição de energia. A "Fábrica do Ferro" não só ilustra o pioneirismo da utilização da energia hidroelétrica na indústria portuguesa, como também representa um importante exemplo de arqueologia industrial, integrando património técnico e memória da indústria têxtil minhota, refletindo o modelo paternalista da época com o seu bairro operário e apoios sociais. Recentemente, o local foi parcialmente reabilitado, acolhendo um complexo desportivo.

The 2003 photograph shows the old hydroelectric power station of the Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos do Ferro (Iron Spinning and Weaving Company) in Fafe, known as the “Fábrica do Ferro” (Iron Factory), founded in 1887 as the successor to a grinding mill. The plant, with early 20th-century technology and an original power of 300 HP, harnessed the hydraulic power of the Ferro River, allowing the factory to be energy self-sufficient at a time when the national electricity grid was still in its infancy. The image shows the generator, shafts, pulleys, and control panel with analog dials, key components for energy production and distribution. The “Fábrica do Ferro” not only illustrates the pioneering use of hydroelectric power in Portuguese industry, but also represents an important example of industrial archaeology, integrating technical heritage and the memory of the Minho textile industry, reflecting the paternalistic model of the time with its workers' neighborhood and social support. The site has recently been partially rehabilitated and now houses a sports complex.
