The Throne Room, also known as the Audience Room or Canopy Room, is located on the main floor of the National Palace of Mafra, next to the King's tower. Built in the 18th century during the reign of King João V, this solemn space was used for official ceremonies and royal audiences. The vaulted ceiling features frescoes by Cirilo Volkmar Machado, depicting the Guardian Angel of Portugal protecting the king and the royal family, surrounded by notable figures. The walls feature frescoes by Domingos António de Sequeira, representing the eight Royal Virtues. Of particular note is the platform where two ceremonial chairs stand, originally created for the inauguration of the equestrian statue of King José I in 1775. The room symbolizes monarchical power and once hosted the ritual of kissing the hand, abolished in 1860 by King Pedro V, who considered it an obsolete ceremony.
