A subida pedestre em calçada de pedra revela o Castelo de Leiria, Monumento Nacional desde 1910, que se ergue no alto de uma colina, sobranceiro à cidade. Inicialmente construído no século XII por D. Afonso Henriques, e ampliado posteriormente por D. Dinis, o castelo desempenhou um papel crucial na defesa da linha do Mondego e na Reconquista Cristã. O percurso, ladeado por muros de alvenaria, antecede a Porta da Albacara e oferece uma perspetiva da imponente Torre de Menagem, o núcleo defensivo central. A estrutura atual reflete diversas fases construtivas, incluindo restauros significativos no início do século XX. Atualmente, o acesso ao castelo é facilitado por elevadores, tornando-o mais acessível, e no interior das muralhas encontram-se a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Pena e os antigos Paços Reais.

The pedestrian ascent on cobblestones reveals the Castle of Leiria, a National Monument since 1910, which rises on top of a hill overlooking the city. Initially built in the 12th century by King Afonso Henriques, and later enlarged by King Dinis, the castle played a crucial role in the defense of the Mondego river and in the Christian Reconquest. The route, flanked by masonry walls, precedes the Albacara Gate and offers a view of the imposing Keep, the central defensive core. The current structure reflects various construction phases, including significant restorations at the beginning of the 20th century. Today, access to the castle is facilitated by elevators, making it more accessible, and inside the walls are the Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena and the former Royal Palace.
