Situadas extramuros em Sortelha, uma das Aldeias Históricas de Portugal, encontram-se as ruínas da Igreja da Misericórdia, também referida como Igreja de Santa Rita ou de São João, com origens que remontam, pelo menos, ao século XIV, embora a estrutura visível date maioritariamente do século XVI, com possíveis ampliações em 1626 e decoração posterior no século XVIII. Construída em granito, a igreja, de nave única e planta retangular, evidencia um portal principal em arco abatido e um arco triunfal de volta inteira, além de uma sacristia adossada a sul e vestígios do campanário em ferro forjado. Próxima ao antigo hospital da Misericórdia e de uma necrópole com sepulturas escavadas na rocha, a igreja integrava um importante polo de apoio religioso e assistencial. Desativada no século XX, a estrutura em ruínas testemunha a presença e ação da Irmandade da Misericórdia na comunidade, refletindo o papel destas instituições na assistência a necessitados em núcleos rurais fortificados.

Located outside the walls of Sortelha, one of Portugal's Historic Villages, are the ruins of the Church of Mercy, also known as the Church of Santa Rita or São João, whose origins date back to at least the 14th century, although the visible structure dates mainly from the 16th century, with possible extensions in 1626 and later decoration in the 18th century. Built in granite, the church, with a single nave and rectangular floor plan, features a main portal with a lowered arch and a triumphal arch, as well as a sacristy attached to the south and traces of a wrought iron bell tower. Close to the old Misericórdia hospital and a necropolis with graves carved into the rock, the church was part of an important center of religious and charitable support. Decommissioned in the 20th century, the ruined structure bears witness to the presence and work of the Brotherhood of Mercy in the community, reflecting the role of these institutions in assisting the needy in fortified rural centers.
