A Ponte de São Gonçalo, sobre o rio Tâmega em Amarante, é um ícone da cidade e um Monumento Nacional desde 1910. Acredita-se que uma ponte romana tenha existido no local, sendo posteriormente reconstruída em 1250 por São Gonçalo de Amarante. A estrutura atual, erguida em pedra granítica no século XVIII, substituiu a ponte medieval que sucumbiu às cheias em 1763. Projetada pelo arquiteto Carlos Amarante, apresenta três arcos desiguais, com um central de maior dimensão. Em 1809, a ponte foi o cenário da Defesa da Ponte de Amarante, onde a população local resistiu às tropas napoleónicas durante a Segunda Invasão Francesa. Atualmente, a ponte liga as margens do Tâmega e é fundamental para o acesso ao centro histórico da cidade, caracterizado por edifícios de fachadas coloridas. A região, conhecida pela sua paisagem verdejante e pela produção de vinho verde, destaca-se também pelo seu rico património cultural.

The São Gonçalo Bridge, over the Tâmega River in Amarante, is an icon of the city and a National Monument since 1910. It is believed that a Roman bridge existed on the site, and was later rebuilt in 1250 by São Gonçalo de Amarante. The current structure, built in granite stone in the 18th century, replaced the medieval bridge that succumbed to floods in 1763. Designed by architect Carlos Amarante, it features three unequal arches, with a larger central one. In 1809, the bridge was the scene of the Defense of the Amarante Bridge, where the local population resisted Napoleonic troops during the Second French Invasion. Currently, the bridge connects the banks of the Tâmega and is fundamental for access to the historic center of the city, characterized by buildings with colorful facades. The region, known for its green landscape and the production of Vinho Verde, is also notable for its rich cultural heritage.
